Overview

Founded in 2012 in Perth Western Australia, Bombora is an award-winning ocean energy company. Bombora has established its European operations in Pembrokeshire, Wales in the heart of a dynamic, wave and tidal energy focussed region and is currently progressing the 1.5MW mWave Pembrokeshire Demonstration Project supported by ERDF funding through the Welsh Government . Bombora’s innovative mWave produces environmentally friendly, consistent and cost competitive energy for commercial scale energy needs in coastal locations throughout the world. Bombora can deliver wave energy as a true alternative to complement today’s renewable energy mix.

2018 | £10.3m funding boost
Bombora secures over £10.3m in EU funding to build and commercialise its mWave.
2017 | Bombora establishes its European headquarters in Wales
Bombora establishes its European headquarters at Pembroke Dock, Wales
2017 | New strategic investor
New strategic investor, Enzen supports construction of first commercial sized mWaveTM with multi-million dollar investment.
2017 | New Albany project
Albany Project added to Bombora’s commercial project pipeline.
2016 | Bombora establishes Portuguese office
Bombora establishes an office in Lisbon, Portugal to accelerate European activities.
2016 | 60MW wave farm feasibility study completed
Bombora completes a feasibility study for a 60MW Portuguese wave farm. The feasibility study was supported by an Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) grant.
2015 | Portugal project planning commences
Bombora is preparing for a stage rollout installation of our mWave converter in Portugal in 2017. This will begin with a single full-scale converter installation in Peniche, Portugal in 2017.
2015 | Melville waters mid-scale sea trial at Cotto Jetty, Western Australia
The Melville waters mid-scale sea trial is a 1:7 scale mWave converter. The converter remains operational and has continued to gather valuable data for over 12 months.
2015 | Awarded ARENA grant and "Accelerating Commercialisation" grant by the Australian Government
Bombora was awarded an Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) grant to pursue a feasibility investigation. Bombora was also awarded an Accelerating Commercialisation grant to assist the company to commercialise the mWave converter.
2014 | Tank testing at Australian Maritime College, Tasmania
A 1:15 scale mWave converter was tested at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania. The data collected was used to validate the early mWave modelling software.
2014 | Seed capital raised
Bombora’s seed capital raising is successfully completed.
2012 | Bombora Wave Power Pty Ltd established
Bombora Wave Power is established.
2012 | First patent lodged
Bombora lodges its first patents protecting the technology contained in the mWave converter.
2009 | Initial mWave developed in farm shed, Western Australia
Growing up on a wheat farm near York, Western Australia, the two brothers Glen and Shawn Ryan built and tested the small scale mWave prototype device using a tractor to generate waves in a swimming pool sized tank.
2007 | mWave concept concieved
The concept for the Bombora converter began in 2007 with founding engineers, Glen Ryan and Shawn Ryan. Promising results catalysed the foundation of Bombora Wave Power in 2012.

Bombora is passionate about ensuring the holistic development of its projects. Our company aims to provide clean renewable electricity to communities in a way that will provide maximum benefit for generations to come.

Comprehensive environmental planning, heritage protection and community engagement is central to this vision. We undertake strict environmental approval processes and conduct rigorous stakeholder and community consultation for all of our projects.

Our company is named after an Australian aboriginal word “bombora”, meaning an area of large sea waves breaking over a shallow reef some distance from the shore. Founded in Perth, Western Australia, we are proud of our heritage and connection to Aboriginal Australia and recognise Noongar people as traditional custodians of the land on which we were founded.
